Rugeley

Small towns are often forgotten about. The histories behind how small towns were originally formed is typically brushed aside to make way for the mass building of homes in an everexpanding population. Rugeley is an example of this manmade progression. As a citizen of Rugeley for the entirety of my life, I have always admired the community within the town. I live in a town called Brereton which is within Rugeley. It is a town which was built to house those who worked in the Power Station from 1961. Twenty years on, the original Brereton is now a few streets lost in a vast housing estate which Rugeley has now become. With the Power Station now knocked down, Rugeley mourns its once iconic skyline.

To resemble the destruction of the Power Station, I chose to build a new memorial in its place. Using an image of Rugeley in all its glory from around 1970, I’ve UV printed the images onto bricks which are built in a wall to reimagine what once was a Power Station. To help capture the essence of the community, moving images and sound clips of Rugeley are presented.
