Discarded
Discarded uses photographic negatives of vintage family group portraits that have been made orphan and sold online. The images of unknown origin are scanned digitally but incorporate faults occurring in the process. This visual fractures and banding represent the possible familial dynamics of the persons illustrated, presenting them both joining and separating. Producing my work in non-traditional ways and utilising domestic and tactile materials creates unexpected results. When producing these images and artefacts, I was overwhelmed with a strong sense of nostalgia for a place, time and people I’d never known. I began thinking, why had these original negatives been discarded? Weren’t these once important to someone? A family member or friend? This work therefore illustrates them in a pre-presented context to consider the importance of preserving the legacies of family photographs.
