Beauty

These photographs of the Derby Hippodrome are part of a broader enquiry into perceptions of beauty in architecture. The building, which is a Grade II listed theatre, was built in 1914. Since its closure, the site has been abandoned for around fithteen years and subject to several incidents of fire damage.

This work aims to draw critical attention to seemingly overlooked details, including the tiling and the window frames, and give restoration to a building which was once occupied and a source of many memories. The blue risograph print which references the architectural blueprint, stands as a model for something new, something re-imagined. The fragmented presentation of the photographs echoes the unkempt condition of the building, but when viewed individually, reveals the singularity of form and texture.
